/// the overcoming of the place ///  TYPE: northern lights observatory  STATUS: master thesis  SIZE: 400sqm

TEXT: the aurora borealis – or the so-called northern lights – a celestial phenomenon, which was for many previous generations a mystery and always awakens our primal instinct of observation. this natural spectacle in the night sky moved and surprises us in its color, its dancing and floating in a impalpable distant from us. venues for observing and enjoying this spectacle we find in the most extreme latitudes. those places are inhabited by the people – surrounded by lush grass, endless forests and the purest form of nature. the place for planning the task of archmedium competition is the finnish town of rovaniemi. but which architectonic and content format is appropriate at this point to the origin of the task? this theme raises to the central question of the project – what‘s enjoyment or observing in its purest form? the design followed the approach to create an atmosphere and produce a situation in which the „object of desire“ can unfold its whole attraction. guidance of asceticism shape the architecture in place – to but to circumstances surrender, see renunciation as positive reduction for thinking-space model. and also to easy as a means to use – so it‘s not meant to be another architectural ensemble people to their primal instincts back out.

/// the typological extension principle ///  TYPE: “EUROPAN 11“ competition  TEAM: h.fenzlein, j.hartleb, r.heiland  SIZE: 80.000sqm  DATE: jun2011

TEXT: billy is a typological development principle for the redevelopment of large-scale factory landscapes. named after the famous ikea shelving system, developed by the example of the linz tobacco factory, from a virtue of necessity and makes the steel skeleton building core to the subject of the place. depending on user requirements, budget and taste, it can be extended, clad, compressed, and can be equipped with a variety of objects. in this combination of modularity and individuality can be generated wide range of uses that overlay coexist, and can arise forward-looking  symbioses. with the help of modular space typologies then different building types and qualities are produced. the large-scale factory premises are broken down by the human scale. how much is the „shelf“ filled determines the urban dynamics.

TEXT: the project “compressed” was developed at temperatures of -30°c during a seminar on ice constructions in värmland, sweden. it deals with mass, weight, contrariness and the idea to build not only on land but also on water. a certain amount of snow was compressed into a block, which was to serve as residence and at the same time as a landmark on the frozen lake. the result were seven tons of snow on a frozen surface that was 35 cm in thickness. a special feature was the carved stairway, by which the block could be climbed and which did not became visible before approaching and compassing the block.

TEXT: the rational and at the same time curious reflection of the subject “water world” is based on the three-dimensional h2o-molecule, which inspired the constructional approach. it is not a direct transfer of the molecular structure, but a rather associative one that takes into account feasibility. the prototype was built on the concept to translate a hexagonal ice structure into architectural space. this is how the geometry of the molecular water structure becomes a space framework, for whose construction only few different slats and joints are necessary. even though it is not as easy to drain water as with the mero system, the design is extremely appealing and ingenious.

TEXT: to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the department of architecture of the leipzig university of applied sciences, we opened an architecture exhibition at a special place, the leipzig bowling club building, which had been empty for ten years and which is a testimony of east german architecture of the 1980s. the exhibition at the bleak building entailed extensive preparations and planning, which could be carried out with the help of various co-operation partners, such as the municipality of leipzig and the federal agency of technical relief. the design for the temporary exhibition was marked by a striking symbolism. all exhibits and objects were arranged along a fluorescent pink trail that ran through the building. trails of information, seats and exhibits functioned as places and projection screens for all media. a large video installation at the glass front dealt with leipzig phenomena that had been subject to contrary treatments, such as the prestigious wilhelminian-style buildings and the profane buildings made with precast concrete slabs.
